Haydon’s Saturday Night Soiree – Music of the 1990s (Part II)

Sometime Sally barman, Ham resident and general local legend Haydon Knapp is the biggest musical obsessive that we know. Haydon’s musical knowledge is surpassed only by the internet and even then it’s a bit touch and go (probably). Given our confidence in Haydon’s unsurpassed encyclopaedic expertise in the arena of song, we’ve asked him to host a series of soirees where he takes us through the definitive sounds of each decade starting from the 1950s up to the present day armed only with a sound system, an iPhone and his sidekick, “Haydon’s Friend”. Having completed his tour through the rock n roll of the 1950s, the sunshine pop of 1960s, the soft rock 70s, the new romantics and the birth of gloomy indie in the 1980s, it’s now time to deep-dive, headphones first, into the 1990s. Without giving away our age, this is the decade we are most excited about. The birth of Britpop, Oasis vs Blur, the last great R.E.M. albums, the explosion of Seattle grunge, the whistles, glow sticks and oversized jeans of happy hardcore and of course, who could forget the teenybop trauma inflicted upon us by the Spice Girls, Take That, Boyzone and the like. In the paraphrased words of Jarvis Cocker, let’s all meet up in the year 2023. Expect an epic evening starting at 7.30pm.
